Day Two
Morning
The second day at Cardigan was the big day of the hike. The day started at 6:00 to get ready for breakfast and lunch making at 7:30. At breakfast, apparently none of the food waste lectures did any good because we still had just as much food waste as we had for dinner the day before. After breakfast we all made sandwiches and other lunch goodies so that we could have a lunch on the trail.Once we had finished making our lunches and getting our stuff together the groups met outside to make sure we all had everything we needed and if so to hit the trail. Several trips back inside our group was finally ready to start out on our way to firescrew which we would hike first and then cardigan and maybe even more. Every so often our group would stop to drop a GPS unit and sketch something such as an especially large tree. As we went along I noticed when we first started out we were walking in a normal forest but then the trees started to change and get smaller and the ground would get rockier and more barren. This is an example of regions because as you go up the mountain there are different regions such as the alpine zone, the top which is rocky and barren.
Afternoon
When we were about halfway up the firescrew we stopped for lunch at the first view of the day and did a sketch of the windmills in the distance. After lunch it was time to hit the trail again and pretty soon we reached the top of firescrew and the alpine bog which was really cool even though it was unusually dry. The alpine bog is also an example of regions because the bog itself is a region. Succeeding the alpine bog my group headed across the saddle to cardigan which did not take very long and the views from the saddle were really pretty. Once, we reached cardigan we did lots of sketches of the views, fire tower and a rubbing of the geodetic survey marker. Next, after a heated argument within my group we decided to continue on climb rimrock and southpeak as well. Fairly soon we reached rimrock which had really interesting views of cardigan and a strange stonewall ish thing on the top of it. After rimrock we were off to southpeak but along the way we walked passed the high cabin and the warden's cabin. When we finally reached south peak we began our long descent back down to the lodge which took a surprisingly long time with many stories and jokes.
Evening
At 5:15 we reached the lodge at the middle of our break time before dinner. At dinner we did better with the food waste, this time only having about half a pound of waste between all of us. After dinner it was time for the nighttimes activities which was a campfire with fun skits and songs that the educators made up and some fun skits that the groups had to make up about their day. Thus concludes the second day at Cardigan AMC lodge.
